Delhi, a beacon for many seeking better lives, sees a huge influx of migrants through the year. Many have no place to stay, and in response, the Delhi government has established shelters to assist those in need. Recognizing the particular vulnerability of women in a city grappling with safety issues, these shelters are also a haven offering protection from both harm and the harsh weather. Among the organizations contributing to this cause, Sofia stands out prominently, managing 25 night shelters in Central Delhi, providing shelter to over 3000 individuals every day.

Operational during the critical winter months from December to March, Sofia’s shelters are more than just a place to sleep. A dedicated rescue van patrols from 10 pm to 4 am, guiding homeless individuals to safety. Remarkably, this proactive approach contributed to zero reported cases of winter fatalities among the homeless in the district last year.

But Sofia’s support extends beyond the physical. By offering counselling, it steers individuals towards a life of dignity, while basic needs such as food, water, and warmth are met with compassion. Moreover, Sofia infuses a sense of community and belonging, celebrating festivals and important days with the homeless, alongside esteemed government officials, reinforcing the message that dignity and pride are within reach for everyone.
